Climbing Aconcagua requires not only physical and technical preparation but also the right transport gear. The backpacks and bags you choose will be your allies for carrying, organizing, and protecting all your equipment during weeks of expedition.
Each stage of the journey and every moment at camp demands a specific type of backpack or bag, so having the right model will make a big difference in comfort and efficiency. For an Aconcagua expedition you’ll need at least three types of transport gear: a strong expedition backpack for the climb, a lightweight trekking backpack for the approach, and a durable duffle bag for mule transport. Choosing the right one for each stage will help you save energy and keep your gear safe throughout the adventure.
EXPEDITION BACKPACK 75-85 LITERS
Your main expedition backpack should have a minimum volume of 70 liters, with enough capacity to carry all the necessary gear for high-altitude climbs.
Key features:
Technical compatibility: adjustable loops or straps for an ice axe and trekking poles.
Personalized fit: adjustable back system, padded hip belt, and shoulder straps to properly transfer weight.
Comfort and ventilation: some models offer breathable backs and adjustable torso length.

For the hikes to base camp, it’s best not to carry your large expedition pack. A smaller 45-liter trekking backpack is ideal.
